The hustle and bustle of NYFW is not just created by the front row attendees, models, and design teams from your favorite labels. Those within the risers and backstage with their fingers glued to the shutter also add to the madness. Whether these photographers are back of house or front of house, it is their lenses that provide the initial view for all to see as soon as the looks exit the runway.
Meet Kearaha Bryant, who maintained exclusive coverage of all Mercedes Benz shows for Nordstrom including everyone from Rebecca Minkoff to David Tlale.
CompoZition: Where are you originally from?
KB: Houston, Tx (Southwest area)
CompoZition: How did you begin working in the fashion industry?
KB: For me, fashion has always been the best way for me to express myself. In 2008, I went to college to be a fashion designer and I figured that I wanted to take a different route than my peers. I studied photography instead because I wanted to help people understand my vision and the way I feel about fashion. I then found a deeper passion that merges both fashion and photography, which is Conceptual Fashion Photography.
CompoZition: What job did you have during NY fashion week this year?
KB: My job was to capture backstage and runway action for publishing in a variety of retail stores and magazine companies.
CompoZition: What’s one tip you could give someone who wants access to shows but may not be associated with a major brand, blog, or publication?
KB:Its more about your confidence level. I know some times you have to have something [badge, pass] to show them, but you have access to everything- everything in life. The more knowledgeable you have the more access you can get. If you do your research you can find out vital details associated with the brand that may help you get into the show. Everything is not super professional. Having knowledge on peoples names can help you finesse your way through. Knowledge and confidence.
CompoZition: I’ve learned in certain instances to just keep walking!
KB: Yes! the moment you stop walking they will know. It’s hard, but its really not.
CompoZition: Can NYFW be challenging as a photographer?
KB: Yes. That experience is the best experience. Having to get up and work. With all thats going on you still have to be able to be creative with the camera. What separates you from everyone else with a camera? Everyone else doesn’t have that same eye. I really try to get creative with the shots I get. I really try to sell something
CompoZition: What show did you enjoy shooting?
KB: Taoray Wang. I love the structure and the designs-the masculinity. Alot of wools. Its more of my style, I could definitely relate.
CompoZition: Best show you went to as an attendee?
KB: Skingraft. A lot of good models and a lot of supporters were in the building. I actually got to go backstage and speak to one of my favorite models which was amazing.
CompoZition: Being in central madness at Lincoln I'm sure you saw a lot of prominent people in the industry. Did you bump into any role models, or people you admire?
KB: I was sitting beneath major photographers [in the risers]. Those people to me are my big brothers. Those are the people I need to know. Those are people in my face now. As long as I speak and put it out in the universe, Im destined to continue to see them. Those people get the best seats in the house and it inspires me to get there every fashion week. How can I work harder to get the best seat in these house? Not necessarily saying that I want to work for Vogue or any of the companies they are under, but I want to be known enough so I can have the best seat in the house as well on my own merit.
CompoZition: As a photographer, how do you wish to best utilize your camera?
KB: by making people feel, whether good or bad. To me, having the ability to make someone else feel, is art. Art is a part of me and I will use my art to tell stories.
CompoZition: What do you think it means to be a composer? Do you think you are one in your own right?
KB: To me a composer is an author, someone who is at one with themselves, strong-minded and determined. I believe I’m a composer because although God is the main author of my story, he’s used me to write stories via photography.
