Whether its managing backstage chaos at one of the biggest fashion weeks on the African continent, or coordinating Rihanna's 777 tour, Arieta Mujay is the one to get the job done. She has been the style influencer behind some of your favorite artist including Kelis, Kelly Rowland, and Lily Allen. She has guided brands such as LVMH finalist Orange Culture and Naija's favorite Deola Sagoe to attain heavy media respect and recognition. As the head of PR at River Island she was able to make her mark in the fashion arena all throughout London. Now Ari (what we love to call her) has entered a new stratosphere with her company African Creative Collective (ACC) where she strives to continue to put African designers on the map!
CompoZition: When you set out to create ACC what was your motivation?
AM: To help nurture and promote African creative talent. I was sick of the perception of what is African fashion in the disapora. I wanted to get our take on fashion recognized so fashion begins to speak for itself.
CompoZition: You have had the opportunity to work in the industry on several continents, what area would you say gives you the most life?
AM: LONDON... London is the coolest city on earth, a TRUE global melting pot.. London is where i honed my trade.
CompoZition: What’s one message you would like to evoke to the fashion world in general?
AM:The Africans are here! we don't want you dictating what our fashion should be, here it is! the creativity of 55 countries in one continent can not be put down into one print.. we are creating world renowed designers, ask MRS O [Michelle Obama], she knows!! Just regard our fashion for what it is, not where it is from.
CompoZition: If you weren’t working in PR, what do you think you would be doing?
AM: I'd be a stylist full time.. i thoroughly enjoy styling, image consulting etc.
CompoZition: You just left NYFW, can you share what you were doing there?
AM: putting together a presentation at soho house for my client JOSHANDNICOL and seeing a few shows during fashion week.
CompoZition: You have made a lot of sacrifice in your personal life for your career. Do you regret that, especially coming from an African background where marriage/family is so important?
AM: NO.. i am what God wants me to be.
CompoZition: What is your definition of a composer? Do you think you exhibit some of those characteristics?
AM: They lead... are able to follow but they arent followers.. they are born leaders and lead by example. I dont know, you will have to tell me if i exhibit these traits..
